BE's Growth/Cyst Removal Pixs VERY GRAPHIC!!

Postby eBay Queen » Mon Jul 25, 2005 11:41 am

BE had a growth on his side. He is prone to dermitsis and I will not know what the growth is until the report comes back from Dr. Drury Reavill from Zoo/Exotic Pathology Service in West Sacramento CA. The surgery was performed by Dr. Helen Roberts of Five Corners Animal Hospital in Orchard Park, NY.

So far he seems to be doing very well. He is eating up a storm and he was given 0.05 cc IM of Baytril and Vit C today. He is being fed Medi-Gold.

The pictures of the surgery are VERY GRAPHIC so please be warned:
The first thing Dr. Roberts said about BE was "OMG! He has gotten huge!" It turns out that he last time he saw Dr. Roberts was 6/12/04 and he weighted 135 grams on 7/22/05 he weighted 250 grams. He doubled his weight during the past year. I believe that has to do with the Mazuri gel food I have been feeding him

Image

He is in the sedation solution of Finquell with an equal amount of baking soda to buffer it.

Image

The anesthesia tube was inserted in his mouth so the Finquell solution could be pumped over his gills while sugery is peformed
Image

Preparing the growth by swabing it with betadine

Image

Image

Few scales were removed the area starts to bleed

Image

More scales being removed so the growth can be exposed better

Image

The growth is starting to be removed

Picture of a large portion of the growth

Still scraping away at the area

Picture of the site after all the growth has been removed

Another close up of the site

No stiches were used. The site after the surgery looked like a small and long "U" shaped indentation. As of today 7/25/05 the indentation is gone. Unless you look really close it looks like nothing has happened to the site.

Wow. Great pics Jo!!

Glad to hear BE's doing ok.

Going to add some narrative with each pic to describe what was happening?

So did she pluck the scales off around the growth?
The last pic looks somewhat different than the next to last pic. the next to last one looks like there were 4 blood vessles leaking blood. The last one looks like she may have cauterized one of the bleeders? Did she close it at all?
THAT IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

Thank you for sharing your photos - I was really curious abou how fish surgery is performed. Incredible!

How long was he out of the water? Did they continually wet him down throughout the procedure?

He is huge! (I will have to look into this Mazuri powder...)

I am so happy to hear that he is recovering well!
Please, tell us more! I hope the path report comes back benign!

He seems to be doing well. You cannot tell where the growth was removed unless you look really hard.

He does not tolerate Jump Start give the poor guy a lot of gas. I am thinking about giving it a try. When do you put it in? The gel food water has to be 200 degrees and I do not want to destroy the acidophilus.
