Type: Hang on the Back Filter
Manufacturer: Rena (Aquarium Pharamceuticals)
Types of filtration possible: Mechanical, Biological and Chemical. The chemical filtration is built into the mechanical replaceable polyester fiber cube.
GPH: 80
Tank Size: Max 20
Pros: Easy to clean, assemle and understand. It doesn't make a mess. Really quiet. Utilizes all three filtration types.
Cons: The water flow doesn't go low enough (for me anyways), even at its lowest setting it is a little strong for a 10 gallon with a little round fish in it. I would like to be able to really slow the flow to a bare trickle for my fish. I have two Rena SmartFilter 20s, one on a five gallon tank and one on a 10 gallon tank.

I purchased extra biostars as the box only came with four. I also bought an extra filter cartridge for the next filter change.

The box contained: The filter housing, with motor, strainers, and some filter media.

The four-sided mechanical/chemical filtration cartridge is placed on the holder and locks in nicely.

The biological filter media is easy to deal with. I just fill up the holder and they just slide on.

Here is the balancer foot on the bottom of the box.

The motor is easy to remove. On this picture you can also see the flow control knob.

The top off is off and ready to add all the necessary items to the filter.

Bio media on the right.

The top is back on.

Sliding in the mechanical filtration cube.

The filter is placed on the tank and ready for the addition of primed water

Every part of this filter is easily removed for a six month comprehensive cleaning. The biostars should not be cleaned or you will kill off all your biofilter bacteria. The water flow is through the center of the filter cartridge and flows out into the hob canister where it meets up with the biobacteria in the biostar media. I like this because when I remove the cube for my monthly cleaning I don't get goo all over my hands, counter top or any where else.
