| Pros: |
The best canister filter. Never loses GPH. Intakes never clog. Can go forever without cleaning and still perform very well. [Not that I recommend this]. Recommended cleaning of filter media is every 3-6 months which is dead on in my experience. The tubing does not get gunky like the Renas. You may have to clear them out once a year if then. All components are quality made and designed. Never gets airleaks or air in the lines. |
| Cons: |
Instructions could be clearer with diagrams. If you are familiar with setting up canister filters this would not be a problem. For a novice they are difficult to understand. No instructions are included for the taps. There are no baskets so you have to be careful when removing the loose media specifically the Ehfisubstrate which is the middle layer. I kept mine in mesh bags to facilitate pulling out and rinsing. |
Media is usually included and consists of the following:
- Ehfisynth. Fine mechanical filtration. Phenol free neutral wool. Placed on top.
- Ehfisubstrate.Large surface area for bacteria to grow on and it's high porosity ensures idea biological filtration. This is the middle layer.
- Ehfifix. Mechanical filter pad placed between Ehfisubstrate and Ehfimech to trap debris and act as a divider.
- Ehfimech. Hollow ceramic design creates eddies which disperse the water into many paths and catches large debris. This is placed on the bottom.
A fine carbon filter pad is also available to use when needed. You can probably place any type of media you want in the filter but i have had the original media that came with the filter in place and it works so well that i have not altered it.
You will need the double taps to turn off the water flow when cleaning. Otherwise you will have to prime. That consists of sucking hard on one end of the tube. This was the first canister filter my husband and I ever bought. The directions could be clearer. It literally took us hours to figure it out. We had no idea what the taps were for as there were no instructions for them. We did not add them until months later.
This is the BEST canister filter available in my opinion. I only clean it every 3-4 months and it is on an overstocked tank. It is highly efficient and keeps the water sparkling clear and clean.
It sits under the aquarium.
The taps have to be splicd into the lines.
There are two green grates with six feet on them. It is important that they are placed correctly with the feet down on the bottom and feet up on the top. All the media is placed between them.
The motor is housed inside the top and seals with a rubber gasket into the canister itself..
These tiny little clip and pins are what keeps the top on and are very easy to lose. It is safer to remove them if you are planning on cleaning the canister itself out.
Here are the coarse and fine filter pads before cleaning. The two black looking pads were blue a couple of years ago. I placed a new blue pad in to show the color difference. I removed the Ehfisubstrate a month back for a 100 gallon tank that was cycling and needed cycled media. I do plan to replace it.
