Below you will find a list of many over-the-counter (OTC) medications for fish. The purpose of this list is to provide a reference for helpers in the "Help! My Fish is Sick!" forum and to help people know what products to look for when shopping. A number of these medications are effective against more than the advertised target. For example, many medications marketed for Ich contain malachite green, which is also effective against fungal infections. Therefore the medication list is organized by target (bacteria, fungus, etc), and medications that are effective against the target are listed in that category. Some medications will appear in almost every category. This can mean one of two things: the medication contains many active ingredients or the active ingredient is very toxic so it will kill many organisms.

This list does not contain recommendations for which medications to use in a given situation. Please visit the Help! My Fish is Sick! forum for guidance on diagnosing an illness and choosing an appropriate medication.

A note about toxicity: most of the active ingredients in fish medications carry some risk of toxicity. The effect a toxic chemical has on an animal depends on both the dose and the individual animal’s sensitivity to that chemical. In many instances the dose necessary to kill parasites, bacteria, or fungi is much lower than the dose that will harm our fish. However, for some medications there is not such a wide gap between safe and toxic, or the toxicity of the compound varies with water parameters like pH and general hardness. Such medications are indicated in the comments column.

Products that contain acriflavine, trypaflavine, or neutroflavine will kill your plants and your bio-filter.

Products containing formalin or formaldehyde will remove oxygen from the water. These products should be dosed during the daytime with increased aeration. Formalin is a known carcinogen.

Products containing malachite green, aniline green, benzaldehyde green, or victoria green should not be used by pregnant women, as this chemical can be harmful to fetuses. Malachite green is also a known carcinogen.
