Treating an ulcer or finrot can often be done without having to resort to using water antibiotics.

How to treat fin rot on a larger fish.

To perform this procedure, it's best to sedate the fish with Finquel or clove oil. These procedures can also be done without sedating the fish, however, care must be taken to make sure fish doesn't get away from you and take a fall. It will also be more stressful for the fish without sedation.

Stuff you'll need:

• Something clean to lay the fish on (e.g. old clean pillowcase, etc)
• Soft brush, clean wash cloth, cotton balls or gauze
• Peroxide or iodine
• Triple antibiotic creme (preferred) or ointment

Instructions

• Set up your work area and make sure everything is very clean. lay out your materials within easy reach.

• Sedate the fish with Finquel or clove oil.

• You'll want to work quickly and finish in a couple of minutes.
• Don't allow the medications to get into the eyes or gills.
• Use the brush and iodine or peroxide to clean the fin edges. Focus on the areas near the end of the fin where you see redness. Stroke towards the end of the fin.
• dab dry, then apply a coat of ointment.

How to clean an ulcer on a larger fish.

• Gauze or clean wash cloths
• Peroxide or iodine
• Triple antibiotic creme (preferred) or ointment
• For large wounds, Denture adhesive powder (Fasteeth, Extra Hold)

Instructions

• Set up your work area and make sure everything is very clean. lay out your materials within easy reach.

• Sedate the fish with Finquel or clove oil.

• You'll want to work quickly and finish in a couple of minutes.
• Don't allow the medications to get into the eyes or gills.
• Use gauze or clean washcloths dipped in iodine or peroxide to clean the sores.
• Dab dry, then apply a coat of ointment and a dusting of denture adhesive powder.
