I've been keeping fish on and off for around 10 years now. The last three years I've done a lot of reading and talking with other fishaholics on the various online discussion boards. I consider myself to have a good understanding of water quality (e.g. pH/KH, ammonia toxicity, and nitrIte toxicity), especially regarding biofiltration and cycling. I also have a good understanding of fish anatomy and physiology, health problems and treatment in goldfish. I own my own microscope and have used it to help identify which parasite was making my goldfish sick. I have also done a lot of reading on goldfish nutrition and make my own gel food. I enjoy do it yourself (DIY) projects and have built a plant filter and lighting for my 125 gallon and my 55 gallon tank.
I currently have 12 freshwater tanks up and running with a variety of species to include fancy goldfish, wakin, watonia and common goldfish, Endler's Livebearers, Swordtails, Mollies, Angelfish, Tetras, Bettas, Killifish, featherfin catfish, shrimp, and a bunch of snails. I have to admit the fancy goldfish are my favorites.
All of my tanks are planted and five tanks are currently set up as Walstad-type natural planted tanks. Only one of my regular planted tanks is what I'd consider high tech, the rest have low to moderate light with plants potted in topsoil. See my website for more information on my tanks, fish and links to some excellent sources of information on fishkeeping.
