Hi, I'm Becky and not too long ago I began keeping goldfish after a long period of being fishless. I had a tropical tank when I was a teenager (long time ago!) that had angelfish, mollies, neons, and tiger barbs. When I was really little I had a red-ear slider turtle with a pink painted back. I got it at the dime store along with a clear plastic lagoon that had a circular ramp leading to a fake palm tree. I was thrust back into fish keeping in the fall of 2004, when I rescued four feeder goldfish that were in a bowl of less than one gallon. I had to do some quick research to find out what they needed. I put them (and subsequently six more) into a 3-gallon Eclipse tank and somehow eight fish survived cycling that tank. I soon realized that this was not going to work, and within one month of getting the first four fish, I purchased a 29-gallon tank, knowing that this was only a temporary fix for eight goldfish. Unfortunately, only two fish survived a highly contagious and lethal infection in that first year. Now I have 8 tanks: 2 goldie tanks, 2 betta tanks, a natural planted tank with platies, cories, plecos, cherry shrimp and MTS and ramshorn snails, a (temporary) snail tank, a 10 gallon qt, and one more tank that will soon be another natural planted tank. I also have two dogs and two cats that I spoil. I have learned a lot since I first rescued those four feeder goldfish. The internet is a wonderful tool to use for information sharing and everything I have learned about fish keeping I found through helpful forums. GAB is an especially friendly and knowledgeable forum and I am happy to be here. |
